American President Lines Ltd. (now simply referred to as APL) is the world’s seventh-largestcontainer transportation and shipping company, providing more than 80 weekly services.
APL operates a containership fleet, including 153 container vessels. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Neptune Orient Lines (NOL), a global transportation and logistics company engaged in shipping and related businesses based in Singapore.
In 1938, the U.S. government took over the management of the Dollar Steamship Co. which was in financial difficulties and transferred their assets to the newly formed American President Lines.
APL is committed to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). We share the CSR philosophy of NOL, our parent company. We have well-defined corporate-wide programs for responsible citizenship based on sustainability, philanthropy and volunteerism.
APL’s Initiatives Based On 501C3
Sailability
The APL has been serving the nonprofit organizations through NOL Group. NOL Group has been supporting sailing programs for the disabled community in Singapore, France, the U.S. and Philippines.
Since 2001, we have been backing Sailability in Singapore, a charity organisation managed by the Singapore Disability Sports Council. Under this program, employees regularly volunteer to rig sailboats and assist disabled sailors. All NOL volunteers and sailors come together in the annual Sailability Regatta. APL Serves The Nonprofit Organizations.
UCP Wheels for Humanity
APL partnered UCP Wheels for Humanity, a U.S.-based non-profit provider of mobility services and equipment. The organisation refurbishes donated wheelchairs and hand-fit them to children and adults with disabilities in developing nations.
Since 1996, UCP Wheels for Humanity has helped more than 50,000 people with disabilities in more than 68 developing nations gain increased mobility. APL does its part for this mission by transporting thousands of these specialised wheelchairs from UCP’s facility in North Hollywood, California to Thailand, Indonesia, Costa Rica, Ukraine and Vietnam.
Children’s Cancer Foundation
NOL is an active supporter of the Children’s Cancer Foundation (CCF). We have participated in fundraising events for the organisation in 2009 and 2010. In Europe, our employees have helped raise funds for cancer research.
In the U.S., APL has helped the American Cancer Society in the Los Angeles metropolitan area with the fundraising program, Daffodil Days. Our refrigerated containers have helped keep the Society’s signature bright yellow daffodils fresh and ready for delivery.
Uplift International
APL and APL Logistics in Indonesia work with Uplift International to improve the health and nutrition of underprivileged families in Indonesia. We help by sponsoring the ocean freight of containers carrying food supplies from the U.S. to Indonesia.
Scholarship grant in California
In 2011, NOL Group funded scholarships at the International Trade Education Program of Glendale, California. The program operates learning academies in 8 Southern California high schools. It keeps at-risk students in school and encourages them to study global trade and transportation issues in college.
Container school in the Phillippines
APL donated 46 40-foot containers to the Philippine Christian Foundation (PCF), a non-government organisation working on the construction of the world’s largest school made from shipping containers. The school is being built for underprivileged children in Tondo, a former dumpsite area and one of the poorest sections in Manila. It will accommodate as many as 1,000 children.
In Cebu, APL has donated eight forty-foot containers towards the construction of a school for children whose parents or family members work in the dumpsite of Lapu-lapu City.
Mobile library in Sri Lanka
In Sri Lanka, APL has donated a container which has been refurbished into a self sustainable, mobile library. The facility is powered by renewable energy sources and protected by an overhanging roof structure. Close to 150 families will benefit from having access to the resources in the mobile library.
School and family assistance in Shanghai, China
Employees of the NOL Group run a volunteer project that is helping 100 underprivileged children cope with school and family life. Each child is paired with an employee for this initiative.
The group concentrates its community relations efforts on five distinct areas of activity. These include
- Helping youth reach their potential
- Assisting the disadvantaged and those with disabilities
- Supporting emergency relief efforts
- Improving and protecting the oceans and air quality
- Contributing to improvements in global trade
As part of the NOL Group, we believe in responsible corporate citizenship and set out to do business with partners who share similar values. NOL’s Vendor Code of Conduct articulates legal, ethical and moral standards expected of its vendors and business partners. It is a set of principles and a minimum standard of conduct for vendors to conduct their business activities in full compliance with applicable laws and regulations of their respective countries and operating locations.
