AllianceBernstein LP is a U.S. based investment management firm majority-owned by France’s AXA. It provides research, diversified investment management and related services globally to a broad range of clients through three buy-side distribution channels, Institutions, Retail and Private Client, and a sell-side business, Bernstein Research Services.

AllianceBernstein traces its origins back more than 45 years. Sanford C. Bernstein was founded in 1967 as an investment-management firm for private clients. Alliance Capital was founded in 1971 when the investment-management department of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, Inc., merged with the investment-advisory business of Moody’s Investor Services, Inc.
In October 2000, Alliance Capital acquired Sanford C. Bernstein. Alliance Capital’s expertise in growth equity and corporate fixed-income investing, and its family of retail mutual funds, complemented Bernstein’s expertise in value equity and tax-exempt fixed-income management, and its private-client business. The raison d’etre of AllianceBernstein Holding is its more than 35% stake in investment manager AllianceBernstein. (French insurer AXA, through its AXA Financial unit, owns a majority of the subsidiary.) AllianceBernstein, which has more than $420 million of client assets under management, administers about 200 mutual funds invested in growth and value equities, fixed-income securities, and index and blended strategies. The subsidiary also offer separately managed accounts, closed-end funds, structured financial products, and alternative investments such as hedge funds. It mainly serves institutional clients such as pension funds, corporations, and not-for-profits, in addition to retail investors.
